What is FreedomPop?
FreedomPop is a cellphone carrier that rides the networks of other carriers, also known as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator. For FreedomPop, they operate on the Sprint and AT&T networks to provide a considerable coverage area for its customers. The company also partners with other cellular providers around the world and is currently expanding its service into Europe and the UK.
FreedomPop offers Unlimited Talk, Text and data plans to its customers and uses Wi-Fi calling to help cover other areas that may not have the best connections available. The company offers a 14 day return policy, so if it doesn’t work for you, just cancel! Much easier than the other major carriers.
From FreedomPop itself:
FreedomPop provides disruptive mobile services including the world’s first 100% free mobile plan so that no one is left off the “connected grid.”

Ok, Free Cell Phone Service. There has to be a catch, right? Well, yes. Lets cover some of some of the commonly asked questions about this service.
The FREE Plan
You will have free service with your account as long as you are using it. You need to have made at least 1 phone call every 60 days to keep your service active. If you plan on giving this to a family member as an emergency device, or as something you would hardly use, you need to make a call from it at least once every 60 days or you can see a 1¢ charge on your debit or credit card as a maintenance fee for inactivity.
To avoid this charge, the company policy states you can use more than 5mb of data and 5 outgoing calls every month.
FreedomPop does have a customer service department, but it seems to only be available through social media, ticket submissions on freedompop.com and its community forums. For most people this is not a problem, since the smartphone itself has internet access.
You can port your number from your current carrier, or apply for a new one at no charge. As per the FCC, opu can port your phone number to any carrier you choose, but it MUST BE ACTIVE. You will not be able to port a phone number to FreedomPop if it is not active, nor can you port FROM FreedomPop if the phone number is not active, This is a universal standard across the industry and FreedomPop is no different here.
How is it FREE?
FreedomPop uses an app that you download to your phone that lets you make calls and texts. This app is required to send or receive texts and forwards calls to the main dialer on your phone to act natively. FreedomPop is a for profit company and makes its money by selling you other services. For example, if you want a 25GB plan, this is an upcharge. There is also advertising from some of it’s sponsors.
Most devices offered via online, or its retail locations like BestBuy and Amazon, will use the Sprint network. The company offers a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program that will use either the Sprint network or the AT&T network depending on what the phone supports. Most Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T device will work on FreedomPop on the AT&T network.
